Zilliqa Mainnet Introduces EVM Compatibility for Greater Accessibility and Functionality

Zilliqa, a high-performance blockchain platform, has announced the official deployment of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility on its mainnet as part of its update v9.0.0. The upgrade is set to open the Zilliqa ecosystem to EVM decentralized applications (dApps), providing greater accessibility and functionality to the platform. This development will enable developers to experiment with deploying EVM smart contracts to the Zilliqa mainnet using user-friendly development tools such as Hardhat and Truffle.

The EVM compatibility was first launched on the Zilliqa testnet in December 2022 and has undergone an extended period of testing and refinement before being rolled out to the mainnet. This implementation of EVM compatibility offers a range of features, including the ability to transfer ZIL natively without complex conversion processes, making it superior to many layer-2 protocol implementations.

With the integration of EVM compatibility, Zilliqa now supports dApps written in Solidity and other EVM-compatible languages, allowing users to transfer ZIL using popular EVM wallets such as MetaMask. The update will provide enhanced interoperability and facilitate the deployment of existing dApps and smart contracts from other EVM-based platforms.

It is important to note that the network will experience downtime of up to 24 hours to facilitate the process of upgrading the network. During this period, no transactions will be processed by the network, and mainnet deposit and withdrawal services are recommended to be temporarily suspended.

The Zilliqa team stated that the EVM functionality would be upgraded in the future to include full interoperability between Scilla and Solidity smart contracts. As with the current deployment, this will first be phased in on the testnet before later being deployed on the Zilliqa mainnet.

The deployment of EVM compatibility on Zilliqa’s mainnet is an essential step towards the broader overhaul of Zilliqa’s blockchain infrastructure as part of the journey to Zilliqa 2.0. The development of Zilliqa 2.0 includes improving efficiency, cost, and scalability, providing a more flexible platform for developers across all industries, and enabling dynamic updates to eliminate any downtime related to protocol upgrades.

Zilliqa’s integration of EVM compatibility is a significant milestone for the platform, bringing new functionality and interoperability to the ecosystem. Developers will now have the flexibility to create a range of decentralized applications using EVM-compatible languages, facilitating a new era of innovation on the platform.
