Yuga Labs Scores Victory in Court Battle Against Ryder Ripps’ RR/BAYC NFT Project

In a significant victory for Yuga Labs, the creators of the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection, a US district court has ruled in their favor in a long-standing legal battle with Ryder Ripps, the co-creator of a copycat NFT project called RR/BAYC. The court has found that Ripps and his co-founder Jeremy Cahen have violated Yuga Lab’s trademarks with their NFT collection.

The legal battle began in July 2022 when Yuga Labs filed a complaint against Ripps and Cahen, alleging that the two had engaged in trademark infringement, false advertising, and unfair competition, among other things. In response, Ripps claimed that the RR/BAYC collection was a satire and protest against Yuga Labs.

In the pre-trial summary judgment ruling on April 21, a US district court in central California found that Ripps and Cahen had indeed infringed Yuga Lab’s intellectual property. The court has further ruled that Yuga Labs is entitled to an injunction and damages, which will be determined at trial.

In a statement shared with Cointelegraph, a Yuga Labs spokesperson hailed the ruling as a landmark victory for the entire web3 industry. They emphasized that the verdict would help hold scammers and counterfeiters accountable in the future.

Ripps, who is also behind a conspiracy theory alleging that the BAYC NFT artwork was designed to convey racist caricatures, has been vocal in his criticism of Yuga Labs. However, the court’s ruling has dealt a significant blow to his claims, and his RR/BAYC NFT project now faces the prospect of substantial damages.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection has been one of the most successful and valuable projects in the web3 space, with some of the individual NFTs selling for millions of dollars. The success of the project has also led to several copycat NFT collections, but the recent court ruling has sent a strong message that intellectual property violations will not be tolerated in the rapidly-evolving world of web3.
