After acquiring Poloniex, Sun allegedly rushed to implement a fake know-your-customer (KYC) system that would stamp any government ID to approve new customers at lightning speed. One former employee joked that they might greenlight a “pic of Daffy Duck.”

Sun allegedly engaged in insider trading with a dedicated market maker to enhance the value of his cryptocurrency and manipulate the market. The article also alleges Sun extracted 300 BTC (about $12.5 million) that Poloniex customers accidentally sent to Tether’s Omni addresses.

According to the disclosure, Sun referred to himself as “Chairman Mao” during a meeting with BitTorrent executives.

One former employee told The Verge that Sun broke so many laws that it was “impossible” to keep up with all of them.

The Verge, which claims to have seen the subpoena, says that Sun faces a range of criminal charges, including wire fraud, money laundering, fraud, and aiding and abetting a crime. According to the report, the list has yet to be finalized by the jury.

It is worth noting that the US has extradition treaties with more than a hundred countries, which is why it is difficult for Sun to escape trial if authorities order his prosecution.

The FBI is said to be leading the investigation against the controversial businessman. An anonymous source cited by The Verge claims that some Sun employees may be cooperating with authorities.
