Top 10 Cryptocurrencies by Market Cap 2013 through 2021
Many changes will take place over 9 years, but Bitcoin (BTC) always remains number 1 in the crypto space. Let’s look back at the top 10 cryptocurrencies by Market Cap 2013 through 2021 and the evolution of Crypto with some highlight events that traders can never forget.
2013
Bitcoin (BTC) was trading around $125 most of 2013. Ethereum (ETH) white paper was released in late 2013. By July of 2015, ETH was top 3.
2014
Dash (DASH) made its first appearance in April and does a 6x to move to the third spot by May.
In January 2014, the total market cap was sub $14 billion.
2015
PeerCoin (PPC) remained in the top 10 all the way until January 2015.
BTC dominance was at 99% in June 2015

The total crypto market cap was over $14 billion.
2017
Bitcoin dominance was at 55% in July 2017.
The Ethereum was on top 3 by July 2015 and remained number 2 until December 2017.
Cardano (ADA) showed up in the top 10 for the first time in November 2017. But only for a minute.

2018
On January 15th, 2018, BTC halts the week-long slice but battled with regulatory pressure.
Tether (USDT) became the first top 10 stablecoin in July 2018.
In October 2018, Ripple (XRP) passed Ethereum and took second place in the top 10.
In 2019, ETH took back its second place and XRP lost its top 3 by May. The specific total crypto market cap at that time was $288,073,410,978.
2020
Bitcoin dominance was at 66% in March 2020.
Polkadot (DOT) debuted in the top 10 in September 2020 with a price of $4.31.
2021
Bitcoin Cash remained in the top 10 from August 2017 to January 2021.
In March 2021, third place was dominated by Binance Coin (BNB).

Up to January 2022, Bitcoin is still undefeatable and takes the first place by coin market cap. Ethereum is still at number 2. Number 3 is a stablecoin, Tether (USDT), number 4 is BNB and number 5 is also a stablecoin, USD Coin (USDC). Number 6 is Solana (SOL), number 7 is Cardano (ADA). XRP, Terra (LUNA), Polkadot (DOT) take the next places, separately.
