According to the local news Tass, the Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov told reporters of Russia Energy Week that they hope to increase electricity bills and taxes on crypto miners.

Maybe Russia will increase electricity bills and taxes on crypto miners

As Chinese miners go abroad, Russia’s Bitcoin computing power has nearly doubled, second only to the United States and Kazakhstan.

“In order to maintain the reliability and quality of power supply, we believe that it is necessary to exclude the possibility of electricity consumption by mining workers at a price for the people,” Shulginov stated.

Shulginov added that the ministry is currently working on this issue. Earlier, the head of the Irkutsk region Igor Kobzev wrote to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak with a request to establish management features of mining operations, especially in the field of energy consumption.

At the same time, one of the options, in his opinion, could be to introduce additional groups of differences in energy tariffs for people at the regional level, similar to Crimea and Sevastopol. Kobzev also said energy consumption in the region in 2021 could exceed last year’s figure by 159% due to an avalanche-like increase in the activity of “black” miners.
