Reportedly, McAfee was arrested last October at El Prat Airport shortly before he had just boarded a flight. McAfee, who is also known for being a cybersecurity pioneer, allegedly failed to file tax statements from 2014 to 2018 and faces a maximum penalty of five years per tax evasion charge and 1-year per failure to file taxes each year. The Court would be accepting the extradition request by three of the five charges attributed to McAfee. A date for a new hearing was not set.
As was reported by local media, Spain’s National Court has suspended a hearing to resolve a pending extradition request by John McAfee for tax-related crimes in the US. No new date has been announced for the new hearing.
The Court alleges that due to some mistakes in case management, the defense counsel has not fully developed his capacity to effectively promote his function. Javier Villalba, an attorney for John McAfee, was unable to obtain the full file of the case before the hearing.
Villalba criticized the way Spanish justice was treating McAfee criticizing his client for being jailed without bail. He said McAfee is in bad shape due to his advanced age (78 years old). He is currently in a Spanish prison for nine months for tax-related crimes.
Villalba argues against this, stating:
“It is not a blood-related crime or drug trafficking.”
A date for a new hearing has not been set.
However, this isn’t the first time that the crypto influencer has done justice to it. McAfee himself stated in a Twitter post that he was jailed in Spain for using a thong mask in August. He was also detained for driving under the influence of controlled substances. control in Tennessee and was also detained for illegal entry in Guatemala.
McAfee was also arrested in the Dominican Republic for bringing firearms and ammunition into the country. But more importantly, he was one of the prime suspects in a Belice murder case where one of his neighbors, with whom he often argued, was shot.
