Southampton Football Club new sponsorship deal includes performance bonuses paid in Bitcoin
According to its announcement, Southampton Football Club – the Premier League club – has signed a new sponsorship agreement with crypto-based betting operator Sportsbet, including the option to receive performance-based bonuses in Bitcoin.

In its announcement, the Premier League club said it would be able to leverage Bitcoin to:
“The deal is the biggest sponsorship agreement in the club’s history and also includes the option for the club to be paid certain performance-based bonuses in Bitcoin at the end of each season, allowing the club the opportunity to take advantage of the new, high-growth currency if it feels it will bring significant future benefits.”
The initial shirt sponsorship deal between Southampton FC and Sportsbet was announced last August at the start of the 2020-2021 season.
Cryptocurrencies have strongly developed European football. In January 2018, during the peak of the early coin craze, Arsenal signed an agreement to promote CashBet’s ICO. Last year, the Catalan football club FC Barcelona launched its own token to enhance fan engagement.
At the end of December, NFL player Russell Okung started receiving half his salary in Bitcoin while seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady is currently setting up his own company NFT.
