Lens Protocol Unveils New Governance Model

Lens Protocol, a pioneering platform aiming to establish the social layer for Web3, has announced the introduction of Lens Improvement Proposals (LIPs). This open and collaborative process is designed to steer the future development of Lens Protocol, redefining social networks as we know them. By embracing principles of user ownership, control, and portability, Lens Protocol aims to foster a decentralized environment where the benefits of social interaction are shared among users, creators, brands, and builders.

Web3, the next-generation internet founded on human connection, emphasizes the significance of social interactions and aims to move away from sole corporate control over these interactions. Lens Protocol, which is currently in closed beta, recognizes the importance of community involvement in shaping its future. LIPs draw inspiration from successful governance models such as Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) and Aave Improvement Proposals (AIPs), facilitating an open and inclusive decision-making process.

The Lens team believes that the dynamism and diversity of thoughts within the Web3 social landscape are crucial. LIPs provide an open platform for anyone to share their innovative ideas, ranging from novel features to bug fixes, updates, and enhancements. The Lens Protocol’s GitHub repository serves as a conduit for these proposals, ensuring collaboration and development take place within a familiar and established framework.

What sets Lens Protocol’s approach apart is the inclusive nature of the governance model. Each proposal undergoes community-wide discussions, fostering transparency and a sense of communal ownership. Every member of the Lens community has an opportunity to participate in the dialogue, contributing their perspectives and expertise. Lens Protocol acknowledges the value of every voice and is committed to ensuring that all opinions are heard.

While not all proposals will gain support, the process itself is designed to be inclusive, transparent, and collaborative. This fosters a sense of community and shared ownership, vital for the long-term success of Web3 Social. By redistributing control from a single entity to the hands of users and the community, Lens Protocol strives for continuous improvement and harnesses the power of collective creativity.

The initial set of proposals on Lens Protocol’s GitHub repository showcases the diversity and potential of the LIPs process:

LIP-0: Establishing an Open Governance Model lays the foundation for the Lens community to propose improvements to the Lens Protocol. From proposal submission to transparent discussions and voting, this model ensures an open, collaborative, and inclusive decision-making process.

LIP-1: Open Standards for Algorithms proposes establishing open standards for algorithms that power the Lens Protocol. Open algorithms offer user choice and participation in decision-making, allowing users to determine which algorithms they wish to subscribe to. By integrating third-party algorithms and machine learning (ML) services, Lens Protocol encourages collaboration and innovation in this critical field.

LIP-2: Open Standards for Metadata focuses on establishing metadata standards within Lens Protocol. These standards provide transparency, interoperability, and user empowerment by defining how metadata is classified, organized, and labeled. Consistent metadata practices foster meaningful interactions for users while promoting seamless integration with other systems in the Web3 ecosystem.

Since Lens Protocol’s beta launch over a year ago, the team has been dedicated to bringing value and empowerment to users, creators, and developers. However, they acknowledge that they don’t possess all the answers. Embracing the principles of Web3, Lens Protocol recognizes the potential for everyone to contribute, and an open and collaborative environment is fundamental to this vision.

With the introduction of LIPs, Lens Protocol enables community involvement in shaping its future. Open proposals provide opportunities for contributions that cater to the needs of the community, leading to innovative solutions. This step towards open governance is an exciting development that emphasizes the collective potential of Web3 Social.

Lens Protocol looks forward to the LIPs process in action, as the community takes an active role in shaping the future of this groundbreaking platform. By embracing an open and collaborative approach, Lens Protocol aims to redefine social networks and empower users, creators, and the community within the Web3 ecosystem.

Launched on Polygon in May 2022, Lens has announced that the project has supported over 110,000 Lens Profiles and hundreds of applications. In early June, the protocol unveiled a $15 million funding round led by IDEO CoLab Ventures. Currently, the project is also in the process of integrating a blockchain scalability solution called Momoka to store transaction data on the social network.
