Kazakhstan busts 13 illegal Bitcoin mining farms amid power concerns
The Department of Energy said that an inspection team had closed 13 mining facilities with a combined capacity of 202 megawatts. Authorities claim to find more illegal miners.
Last year, Kazakhstan became the world’s second-largest Bitcoin producer after miners repeatedly moved there following China’s mining crackdown, but an unstable electricity supply has made the mining environment difficult. Mining has worsened in Central Asian countries, triggering a new wave of migration.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev legalized Bitcoin mining last June by approving a tax rate for cryptocurrency mining but began calling for a mining tax increase this month. According to local media, the government is expected to develop a package of official measures to regulate mining by April 1.
