Indian police have sought to increase law enforcement action taken against darknet vendors in recent months

Since the emergence of anonymous darknet marketplaces with Silk Road in 2011, India has comprised a dominant source of pharmaceutical products sold via the dark web. As a result, India’s Narcotics Control Bureau has arrested several cases involving darknet drug organizations and black-market drug corporations in recent months, especially after the agency is involved in the global “Operation Trance” enforcement action.

Indian police cooperate with 120 research organizations to aid policing initiatives targeting the darknet

India’s Bureau of Police Research and Development is planning to develop an interactive web portal to support law enforcement with darknet surveys once potential solutions from 120 organizations have been received. Besides, the portal will provide information on cybercrime, investigative methods, investigative techniques as well as digital solutions for tracing sources of voice over internet protocol calls, cracking passwords, and decrypting protected files.

Report from local media outlet The Hindustan Times stated:

“The portal will seek to provide information on cyber crimes, their modus operandi, investigation techniques as well as digital solutions for tracing sources of voice over internet protocol calls, cracking passwords, and decrypting protected files.”

BPRD chief V S Kaumudi said:

“The initiative as a capacity-building measure for law enforcement and an exercise to take cybercrime investigation tools to the cutting edge level. Furthermore, we must also note the heightened the risk of cyberattacks amid the increasing dependence on digital systems amid the pandemic coronavirus.”

The global Operation Trance enforcement action in India

Indian police have been seeking ways to increase law enforcement action against darknet providers in recent months. In particular, the owner of a drug company was arrested in connection with an international drug organization in February.

Similar arrests also followed global efforts as part of Operation Trance. In it, we have witnessed transnational cooperation among law enforcement agencies to break down the darknet drug and pharmaceutical networks around the world.

The Operation Trance program is expected to create a range of potential solutions and strategies to expand India’s law enforcement agency’s deep web control capabilities.
