Four South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges assisting in the investigation of “nth rooms” – the child porn scandal

Four South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges allegedly assisting local law enforcement agencies in investigating the case known as “nth rooms” have been headlined nationwide. According to a report published on March 25 by Chainnews, Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, and Korbit have partnered with the police to reveal the identities of those involved in the child porn scandal.

Cryptocurrency transactions involving “nth rooms”

South Korean police have said that about 10,000 people have joined the Telegram groups through which pornography is distributed. Although it has not been possible to quantify substantial, authorities say that a portion of the members paid about $ 1,200 in cryptocurrencies for gaining access.

According to the statistics, “nth rooms” have 74 victims, of which 16 are minors. Offenders hold victim’s personal information, threatening them to record videos of sexual violence. These videos have been sold to about 260,000 different men. Specifically, according to Insight, out of 260,000 users of “nth rooms,” more than 10,000 people are members of the fixed fee, can find personal information. And among these 10,000 users, there are many influential figures in Korea, such as celebrities, athletes, CEOs of startup companies, and some influential professors in academia.

Besides, according to Wikitree, Cho Joo Bin – the leader of the chat room, is also connected with many influential politicians and celebrities to trick victims into contact, turning them into sex slaves.

As he was moved away from a police station in Seoul, Cho said:

“I apologize to those who were hurt by me. […] Thank you for putting a brake on the life of a devil that could not be stopped.”

Little girls are victims of online child porn rounds

So far, police have claimed that 74 people were victims of crime, and among them, there are 16 girls. According to the New York Times stated that nearly 300,000 people have paid to access online chat rooms where pornography has been distributed since 2018.

For years, South Korean police have cracked down on porn sites to combat child pornography.

Local government investigations emphasize that Telegram has been encrypted enough to protect freedom of speech. Unfortunately, criminals have taken advantage of these safeguards, making them an essential means of prostitution.
