Ethereum Plans to Launch New Testnet “Holli” to Improve Testing Environment

The Ethereum network is preparing to launch a new testnet called “Holli” to address the increasing demand for test environments by application developers. According to Tim Beiko, who supports the Ethereum protocol, the use of testnets by app developers has rapidly increased over the years, leading to a shortage of Ethereum available for testing purposes. This has been a problem for developers who need to test their applications on a live network before launching them. The launch of Holli is expected to improve the supply of Ethereum for testing purposes and enhance the overall testing environment.

Testnets are used primarily by client and app developers, node operators, and stakers, each with different needs for testing environments. However, as Beiko explains, there have been previous problems with the supply of Ethereum for testnets, such as the permissioned testnet “Sepolia.” During that time, the problem was resolved by issuing ERC-20 tokens other than “SepETH” to make it easier to issue more SepETH tokens efficiently.

In contrast, the public testnet “Goerli” has been operating with “GoETH” for testing purposes. However, as the number of participants in the testnet increases, the “reliability” of the distribution method of GoETH has been compromised, according to Beiko.

To address this issue, the LayerZero project, which is developing a cross-chain protocol, announced the launch of a marketplace to purchase Ethereum for the Goerli testnet. Although the marketplace enables purchasing testnet Ethereum using mainnet Ethereum, it has received criticism for potentially limiting the freedom of testnets.

The launch of Holli is a welcome move by Ethereum to improve the testing environment and ensure that developers have access to the necessary Ethereum to test their applications effectively. The importance of testnets cannot be overstated as they enable developers to identify and address any issues before launching their applications on the live network. This ensures a smoother and more secure experience for users, which ultimately benefits the entire ecosystem.
