Ethereum Co-founder Vitalik Buterin Deposits $1 Million Worth of ETH to Coinbase
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has reportedly deposited 600 Ethereum (ETH) worth approximately $1 million into Coinbase on Monday. This development comes as a curious move amid the ever-changing landscape of the cryptocurrency market. At the same time, another previously dormant Ethereum address that participated in Ethereum’s initial coin offering (ICO) back in 2014 has moved 191 ETH, valued at around $320,000, to a different address on August 20, according to data from Ethereum network explorer, Etherscan.
The Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit organization responsible for the development and promotion of the Ethereum platform, conducted the ICO between July 22, 2014, and September 4, 2014. During this period, the Foundation successfully raised a total of $18.3 million by offering 60 million ETH at a price of $0.305 per coin.
Analysts and industry experts have been intrigued by these recent developments and have sought to decipher the motives behind the actions. Decrypt, a reputable source in the blockchain space, has confirmed with analysts that it’s improbable for the second address, associated with the ICO participant, to be owned by Vitalik Buterin. This separation of identities adds another layer of intrigue to the movement of these significant amounts of ETH.
Interestingly, the address associated with the ICO participant did not merely move their ETH but also engaged in transactions involving Unitbot (UNIBOT) and ApeCoin (APE) tokens. This suggests that the owner of the address is not just a passive holder but an active participant in the ever-evolving cryptocurrency ecosystem.
On the other hand, Vitalik Buterin’s recent actions have caught the attention of various on-chain analytics firms. Nansen, a reputable firm in the field, has confirmed the 600 ETH transfer from Vitalik’s wallet to Coinbase, further noting that Buterin had initiated a test transaction of 0.1 ETH just two days prior. While this transfer amounts to only about 0.01% of Ethereum’s daily average trading volume over 30 days, which stands at $6.3 billion according to CoinGecko data, the significance lies in the decision itself.
Arkham data, another on-chain analytics firm, has been meticulously tracking Buterin’s activities. They report that the Ethereum co-founder has transferred around $3.6 million worth of ETH to various exchanges, including Kraken, Gemini, and Coinbase since the beginning of the year. A notable trend in these transfers is the apparent preference for Kraken, where the majority of previous transfers were directed.
With the recent deposit of 600 ETH into Coinbase, Vitalik Buterin’s total transferred amount to the exchange has reached a substantial $4.6 million. This move could be interpreted in various ways, from personal portfolio management to strategic positioning within the market.
