Dozens of Coinbase customers were unable to access their accounts to buy and sell as Bitcoin prices soared

Reportedly, the victims’ accounts began to freeze at the end of October. They were required to re-upload their driver’s license or passport documents to verify their identity. However, even if they did, their account is still in a state under review. This leaves them completely frozen without explanation, unable to buy or sell cryptocurrencies on exchanges or withdraw funds.

Meanwhile, many people reported that they received no response from customer service despite being contacted. 50 to 100 new posts are complaining about Coinbase every week because they cannot log in or have no access to their funds.

Coincidentally, the incident came again at a time when Bitcoin price reached a high of over $ 19,700.

Elsewhere, it can be said that the reason given by Coinbase is very inconclusive. Aside from technical issues, the company did not specify why a client was unable to access the account. There have been 10 disconnection issues between March and December 2020 involving Coinbase, which affected customers trying to trade, including 3 crashes last month, but none of them. of these involves customers having their accounts locked out.

Despite a lot of emails and filling out complaint forms on Coinbase’s website and texting on Reddit and Twitter, Coinbase still only replied that the case was on the right track and the team was working through the queue.

When asked by the company to explain, a Coinbase spokesperson said:

“We are aware that a small number of our UK customers have experienced technical issues using our platform and deeply apologize for any inconvenience. We can confirm that we have restored functionality and that most customers whose accounts were impacted are now able to make purchases and withdraw funds from the platform. We have contacted all those affected by this issue and encourage any users who have questions to visit our Help Center.”

They added:

“At Coinbase we work hard to ensure a seamless experience for our customers and are disappointed when we fall short of this standard. We are constantly investing in improving our systems, whilst maintaining high compliance standards, in line with evolving regulation.”

Coinbase has now said most affected customer’s accounts are now unlocked.
