Cryptography expert Adam Back dispels the news that the FBI hack the Bitcoin wallet of the DarkSide hacking group to recover $2.3 million

As shared on Twitter by Blockstream CEO Adam Back, there is no story that the FBI and the US Department of Justice hacked the Bitcoin wallet of the DarkSide hacking group.

The FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice does not hack the Bitcoin wallet of the DarkSide hacking group

Reportedly, it was reported that the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice were able to hack the Bitcoin wallet of the DarkSide hacking group to recover $2.3 million worth of Bitcoin out of the $4.3 million paid to the ransomware hackers.

But as Back shared, no Bitcoin wallet was hacked, nor is even known to be possible. Ransom hackers used a rented cloud server. The FBI got a subpoena and took control of it and recovered coins.

He asserted that the authorities recovered the funds without hacking the wallet because that was not possible:

“No bitcoin wallet was hacked, nor is even known to be possible.”

Back shared that the hackers had rented a cloud server to hold the BTC they had received as ransom after the attack on the Colonial Pipeline that took place in May.

The FBI and DoJ took control of the server and seized the coins.

“Ransom hackers used a rented cloud server. FBI got a subpoena and took control of it and recovered coins. That’s it.”

Furthermore, Back also shared details of the server the FBI got control of to recover coins from ransom payments relating to the colonial pipeline hack.

Should be a fairly small set of transactions that fit the criteria of amounts mentioned. However, why didn’t they seize the whole amount? That doesn’t make any sense.
