BOE Governor Andrew Bailey: The U.K. central bank is considering releasing a CBDC

Recently, the Bank of England (BOE) governor Andrew Bailey discussed the issuance of digital currency by the U.K. central bank.

Specifically, Bailey discussed the relevance of the digital currency system to students during an online seminar event on Monday.

“We are looking at the question of, should we create a Bank of England digital currency. We’ll go on looking at it, as it does have huge implications on the nature of payments and society.”

BOE is one of several central banks around the world who are considering whether to create fully digital versions of the national currency.

“I think in a few years’ time, we will be heading toward some sort of digital currency,” Bailey said.

Earlier this year, BOE chief cashier Sarah John said it was important for central banks to study digital currencies in the context of competition from private entities is also considering creating digital currencies.
