Astar Network partners with Shibuya to drive Web3 initiatives in Tokyo

Astar Network, a leading blockchain platform, has partnered with Shibuya, one of Tokyo’s largest and most densely populated cities, to support the ward’s web3 initiatives. This historic agreement is the first time a blockchain has signed a partnership agreement with the city. Shibuya is known as Japan’s Silicon Valley, a hub of young entrepreneurs, high fashion, and miles of shopping outlets centred around Shibuya station.

The partnership will provide Shibuya with access to the web3 ideas that are currently being developed by Astar’s more than 400 developers, who are building the next generation of digital applications. The city will have access to Astar’s web3 Hackathon sponsored by Toyota and its Web3 Incubation Program with Sony Network Communications.

In a statement, Sota Watanabe, the founder of Astar Network, expressed his delight at the partnership, saying that Shibuya is the largest city for young people in Japan and the city of startups. He added that Astar is honored to have opened its office in this tech hub and signed a basic agreement with the city to utilize web3.

As part of the agreement, Astar will host regular hackathon events and education programs to help Shibuya develop and grow its web3 initiatives. Startale Labs Japan, a company that develops dApps and infrastructure and provides business consulting services, will also set up its headquarters in Shibuya, using Astar Network as the backbone to conduct R&D and incubation activities on behalf of the city.

Astar Network is a leading blockchain platform that supports the building of dApps with EVM and WASM smart contracts. It offers developers true interoperability with cross-consensus messaging (XCM) and a cross-virtual machine (XVM). Astar’s unique Build2Earn model empowers developers to receive basic income through a dApp staking mechanism for their code and the dApps they build.

Astar’s ecosystem has become Polkadot’s leading Parachain globally, supported by major exchanges and tier 1 VCs. Astar offers the flexibility of all Ethereum and WASM toolings for developers to start building their dApps. To accelerate growth on Polkadot and Kusama Networks, Astar SpaceLabs offers an Incubation Hub for teams of all backgrounds and focuses.

Overall, this partnership between Astar Network and Shibuya is an exciting development for both the blockchain industry and the city of Shibuya. It will provide Shibuya with access to cutting-edge technology and help it to continue to grow as a hub for young entrepreneurs and startups.
