Pechin is a Brazilian crypto businessman who is believed to have orchestrated the murder of his former lawyer Assis Henrique Neto Rocha. He was arrested in August 2019 on suspicion of getting involved in a Ponzi scheme and hired someone to kill Rocha for R $ 500,000. Gunmen ambushed and murdered Rocha at a gas station in São Paulo in June 2019. He murdered Rocha rather than pay the man an R $ 2.5 million ($ 471,965) bitcoin debt remains jailed after Brazil’s Supreme Court rejected his request for freedom.

In a press statement, the Court said:

“Prosecutors allege Pechin owed Rocha R $ 2.5 million due to the sale of bitcoins at the time of Rocha’s death. That debt as the motive for Rocha’s murder.”

A subordinate court had previously denied Pechin’s request for liberty after finding strong evidence of stealing that he was involved in the Rocha murder case. Although initially complicated by an initial order, Habeas Corpus’s denial is now in effect. An investigation into Rocha’s death is underway.
